Understand the work, the charges, and the agreement before drawing conclusions.
Start with the agreement
The State Bar's fees and billing guide explains common arrangements and questions to ask. Clarify what services are covered, who will work on the matter, how time is billed, and how expenses are handled.
Use a billing-question worksheet
- Identify the invoice date, invoice number, and line item.
- Copy the description and amount into your private notes, with the source page.
- State your question neutrally: what work does this entry cover, which rate applies, or how was this expense calculated?
- Compare the entry with the written agreement and any later written changes.
- Keep the response and supporting explanation with the original invoice.
If the concern remains
The State Bar's fee-dispute guide describes fee arbitration as a possible route after discussion has not resolved a disagreement. Review current program instructions and any notices with independent counsel. A billing question does not itself establish misconduct.
